What is IPL Laser Hair Removal?

IPL laser hair removal is a safe, non-invasive treatment that permanently reduces the number of regrowing hairs.

Light pulses are used to damage hair follicles, and impair their ability to grow hair. Damaged hair follicles are eliminated, with excellent long-term results.

How does it work?

Highly controlled pulses of light are emitted with the IPL handpiece from a smooth, transparent Light Guide and are selectively absorbed by the hair follicles lying below the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the hair, which damages the re-growth potential of the follicle – all without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Which hair and skin types can receive IPL Laser hair removal?

IPL hair removal is effective on all hair if the hair bulb has dark pigment: black, brown, red and even blond hair can be effectively reduced, provided the hair bulb has dark pigment. IPL hair removal is safe for most skin types. However fair skins with dark hair have the best results.

What is an IPL Laser hair removal treatment like?

IPL Laser hair removal is typically performed highly skilled technician.. Your treatment begins by shaving away the hair in the treatment area. A cold gel is usually applied to the area to be treated, and you may be given dark glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from the bright light. The pulses of light are applied to your skin, damaging the hair follicles and their ability to re-grow hair. You may feel a slight stinging with each light pulse, though most people tolerate the treatment without numbing cream. When the gel is removed, much of the hair is wiped off with it. The remaining hair in the treated area falls out over the next week or two.

What should you expect?

The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the procedure and the skin type. You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment site, which are in fact, positive clinical results and indicate that the follicle has responded to the treatment. Treatment is generally administered in a series of four to twelve sessions that yield excellent long-term results. Side effects are rare, and if they do occur, are typically minor. Most people return to normal activity right away.

How does IPL remove hair?

Controlled flashes of light are absorbed by the dark hair in the follicles lying below the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the dark hair, which damages or destroys the regrowth potential of the follicle, all without damaging the surrounding tissue.

What to do before and after treatment?

You will be asked to trim or shave the hair prior to your treatments. For your comfort a topical numbing cream may be applied to the area 1 hour prior to treatment. To aid in healing you are required to use our prescribed aftercare treatment products. You will be rebooked for your next treatment in 4-8 weeks time.

What to expect during treatment?

Upon commencement of treatment a cool soothing gel will be applied to the skin. The Luminus M22 IPL handpiece is then rested on your skin and pulses of light begin destroying your unwanted hair. Each pulse of light will feel hot & is likened to a rubber band flicking the skin. The dead hairs will detach from hair follicles and fall out over the next 2-3 weeks.

Are there any possible side effects?

Side effects are rare. You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment site, but this typically goes away within hours. On rare occasions, some blistering or darker/lighter skin changes may occur, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications. Following the treatment, you can generally return to work and resume all regular activities immediately.
