Frequently Asked Questions
1. What Is High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound HIFU?
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target the layers of skin just below the surface. The ultrasound energy causes the tissue to heat up rapidly. Once the cells in the targeted area reach a certain temperature, they experience cellular damage. While this may seem counterintuitive, the damage actually stimulates the cells to produce more collagen — a protein that provides structure to the skin. The increase in collagen results in tighter, firmer skin with fewer wrinkles. Since the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site below the skin’s surface, there’s no damage to the upper layers of the skin and adjacent tissue.HIFU may not be appropriate for everyone. In general, the procedure works best on people older than 30 with mild-to-moderate skin laxity. People with photodamaged skin or a high degree of loose skin may need several treatments before seeing results. HIFU isn’t recommended for people with infections and open skin lesions at the target area, severe or cystic acne, and metallic implants in the treatment area.
2. Can HIFU Replace a Face Lift Procedure?
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a relatively new cosmetic treatment for skin tightening that some consider a noninvasive and painless replacement for facelifts. It uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin.HIFU is most widely known for its use in treating tumours. The first reported use of HIFU for aesthetic use was in 2008.
Several clinical trials have found HIFU to be safe and effective for facial lifting and refining wrinkles. People were able to see results in a few months after treatment, without the risks associated with invasive surgery.
The procedure is also used for overall facial rejuvenation, lifting, tightening, and body contouring. So far, HIFU has been found to be a promising treatment that could replace facelifts.
3. How is HIFU Different to Laser Procedures?
HIFU uses sound energy, tried and true ultrasound, which has unique properties that allow it to bypass the surface of the skin to treat depths not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic device. HIFU stimulates collagen production in the skin’s foundation, resulting in a clinically significant lift of tissue over the following 2-3 months. Lasers rely on light energy, which cannot reach deeper skin layers at an optimal temperature, so laser treatments typically only treat superficial skin. Since the two technologies often treat different types of skin issues, they’re actually very compatible.
4. How Does HIFU Stimulate Collagen Production?
During the treatment, the transducer delivers and deposits focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature for collagen regeneration. The treatment jumpstarts a natural process, known to produce fresh, new collagen. The treatment itself doesn’t involve any creams, fillers or toxins, it just relies on your body’s own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results.
5. How long will a HIFU Treatment take?
The length of the treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically takes 90 minutes, while a chest treatment on its own takes approximately 30 minutes.
6. Will I Need to Take Time off Work?
With a single HIFU therapy treatment, there is no downtime. After your procedure, you can resume your normal activities immediately, without having to follow any special post-treatment measures. We have even had clients come to the clinic on their lunch break to have the treatment, no creams required and your general skincare plan and make-up can be applied as normal.
7. What Does HIFU Feel Like?
As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.
8. How Many HIFU Treatments Will I Need?
Most clients need more then one treatment. However this may be based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and the individual’s collagen-building process, most clients will benefit from additional treatments. Because skin continues to age, future touch-up treatments can help clients keep pace with the body’s natural ageing process.
9. Who is a Good Candidate for HIFU?
A good HIFU candidate has mild to moderate skin laxity where the skin begins to feel and look less firm. Examples include a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging under the chin, and lines or wrinkles on the chest. Of course, the best way to find out if you’re a suitable candidate is to consult with Skin Sensations.
10. How Much Does HIFU Cost?
The cost of a HIFU treatment can range widely depending upon the size of the area being treated. Cost ranges from $495 to $1,650.
11. Is HIFU Safe?
The HIFU procedure has been used safely in over 250,000 treatments worldwide. Ultrasound energy itself has been used safely in the medical field for more than 50 years.
12. Are There Any Side Effects?
The skin might appear flushed at first, this can be during treatment but sometimes lasting longer, the redness should, however, disappear within a few hours. Some clients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are temporary in nature. Other, less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin. As with any cosmetic procedure, there is the possibility of other rare effects, which your practitioner will review with you.
13. How Long Does it Take to See Results and How long do They Last?
After your HIFU Treatment, you may see some initial effects, but the ultimate results will take place over 2-3 months, as your body naturally regenerates collagen. Since the procedure stimulates your own collagen production, how long the results last really depends on you. The treatment produces new collagen on the inside, but your natural ageing process will dictate how long that translates into visible results on the outside.
HIFU FACIAL COST
According to ASAPS (Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons), the average cost for a non-surgical skin tightening procedure in 2019 was $1550. This is a drastic difference from a surgical facelift procedure, which carried an average cost of $7655.00 in 2018
Ultimately, the cost will depend on the area being treated and your geographic location, as well as the total number of sessions needed to achieve the desired results.
You should contact a HIFU provider in your area for an estimate.

HIFU vs. Facelift
While HIFU carries far fewer risks and costs than a surgical facelift, results may not last as long and repeated procedures may be needed. Here’s a summary of the major differences between each procedure:
HIFU Non-invasive; no incisions, Cost $1,707 on average in 2017, Recovery time None, Efficacy-In one study trusted source, 94% of people described the improvement in skin lifting at a 3-month follow-up visit. Long-term effects -The same study trusted source found that improvement in appearance persisted for at least 6 months. You will likely need to have additional HIFU treatments once the natural ageing process takes over.
Surgical Facelift An invasive procedure that requires incisions and sutures, Cost $7562 on average or more, Recovery time- 2-4 weeks, Risks - Pain or scarring, Hair loss at the incision site, Anaesthesia risks, Bleeding, Infection, Blood clots, Efficacy- In one study trusted source, 97.8% of people described the improvement as very good or beyond expectations after one year. Long-term effects - Results are long-lasting. In one study trustedsource, 68.5% of people rated improvement as very good or beyond expectations
HIFU facelifts have evolved to target deeper tissue planes with less downtime. And now the next evolution in aesthetic science developed as a device consisting of 11 lines for faster, more accurate results. It delivers focused ultrasound energy to the same foundational layer typically addressed by surgeons during cosmetic surgery- without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. This initiates the body's natural response to stimulate the growth of fresh, new collagen and strengthen weak collagen. Some clients see an initial effect right after their treatment, but the real results appear over 2-3 months as new collagen builds, gradually lifting and tightening skin on the face and neck and smoothing skin on the chest.
While HIFU does not duplicate the results of a facelift, it's an exciting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery- and for clients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.
The system focuses HIFU energy up to a depth of 16mm, causing a rapid local temperature rise, destroying targeted adipose tissue. Targeted fat is destroyed while the surrounding tissue is left undamaged. Because focuses on high-intensity, high-frequency energy below the surface, it works differently than other “sculpting” devices, offering true body contouring that other treatments just can’t deliver. How The HIFU Treatment Works WE GO DEEPER! Our cartridges start from 1.5mm to 16mm depths!
Our advanced 3D HIFU machine targets the upper dermis 1.5mm, lower dermis 3.00mm and most importantly the SMAS 4.5mm. The SMAS is the layer that sits between the muscle and the fat, the actual area a plastic or cosmetic surgeon would pull and tighten under the knife. HIFU targets this layer without any surgical incisions, giving the patient a no-downtime facelift. This means you can gain excellent results without any risks associated with surgery. Treatments are fast and results are seen immediately! This is why the HIFU treatment is known as the ‘lunchtime facelift’. Not only does it effectively target the SMAS, which is more difficult to reach with other modalities, but it is also adjustable to focus at the skin, subcutaneous or SMAS layer. This gives flexibility for the physician in opting to treat any layer based on the patient’s condition and is especially useful in dealing with patients of differing facial tissue thickness and textural quality.
Last but not least, where indicated in treating skin laxity, this is extremely useful. Where most modalities could only target at a defined level, HIFU is able to target more levels of the facial tissues, resulting in full-thickness contractions which translates to a better result for patients. It addresses any area on the face, neck or body with skin laxity issues and this highly effective treatment can bring definition to the face, neck, arms, thighs, buttocks, tummy, chest.
Where Can I Have HIFU Treatment? HIFU works by using ultrasonic energy in combination with heat. The ultrasonic energy and heat bypass the surface of the skin to deliver targeted energy specifically into the deep, structural tissues and muscles of the skin. As new fibres start to regenerate, this increases the production of collagen which results in a tightening effect of the tissues from the inside out. The HIFU transducer irradiates 65-75ºC of HIFU energy into the skin, this then creates thermal coagulation on the target layers of skin tissue with no damage on the skin surface or surrounding tissues. Following the initial treatment, the skin starts to undergo a wound healing process that stimulates collagen synthesis and regeneration. Unlike lasers, radiofrequency, surgery and other cosmetic procedures, HIFU bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver the right amount of ultrasound energy at the right depths within the skin at the desired temperature. This HIFU energy triggers a natural response under the skin, causing the body to enter into the regenerative process, resulting in the production of new collagen. Other ultrasound body contouring technologies often use low-intensity, low-frequency, or unfocused energy which can require multiple treatments and lead to unpredictable results. The system uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy to destroy targeted subcutaneous fat and deliver uniform, predictable results after a single 30 minute to one-hour treatment.
