Diagnosis:

Pigmentation occurs in two different forms; passive and inflammatory. Inflammatory pigmentation occurs as a result of the activation of our skin’s natural defense mechanisms. Melanin moves up to defend against trauma caused by factors such as sun exposure, incorrect products, inflammation or injury. Passive pigmentation results from an internal imbalance which stimulates the melanin stimulating hormone. These imbalances can be caused by pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, the contraceptive pill and various medications. Each cause needs to be treated differently.

Solution

We treat inflammatory pigmentation first by calming the skin and removing or reducing the trigger, whether it is triggered by UV, trauma or injury. We introduce ingredients that suppress further melanin production by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase in the skin. If inflammation is still present due to trauma, injury or acne, we can speed up the healing process and reduce inflammation with Ultra-Fusion and Lira Clinical Facials. If there is minimal inflammation present, we can target pigmentation using IPL, Peels or Nano-Fusion depending on the cause. These treatments brighten and refresh the skin by removing dead cell build up and the accumulation of melanin (dark patches).

Passive pigmentation is treated differently. This form of pigment is often combined with a vascular component which requires reduction of inflammation, strengthening of capillaries and calming down easily triggered pigment cells. Melasma can also be helped by managing your lifestyle. If possible, removing the trigger for example speaking with your doctor about your medication options if that is the cause and avoiding activities that bring heat to the skin such as unprotected sun exposure, saunas etc. With melasma, treatment is about managing and calming the condition to reduce its appearance.
